LGBTQ+ Supplement guide to the Elements of effective practice for mentoring
There is a growing recognition in the mentoring field that the failure to provide thoughtful, responsive, and inclusive programming leaves LGBTQ+ youth at risk for additional harm each time they receive services from ill-prepared staff and incompatible mentors.
This supplement, co-developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) and MENTOR, provides recommendations to address many of the barriers that have traditionally prevented LGBTQ+ youth from being served more effectively by youth mentoring programs.
Informed by site visits, staff trainings, and extensive procedural changes made at 20 local BBBSA Affiliates across the United States of America, this supplement presents many direct examples of the changes these sites have made to their policies, procedures, staff development, and communications.
