Children, Youth and Media in the Digital Age
In the digital age in which we live, children and young people are taking an active role in their relationship with the media, and the vision of passive, helpless consumers has been practically overcome. Due to the possibilities and opportunities of interaction and participation that digital media have brought, the younger public is seen – sometimes exalted – as both consumer and producer of content, being referred as prosumers or produsers.
This book by Sara Pereira focuses on the conditions of access, use and production of content on digital platforms by children and young people, aiming to critically discuss the above concepts and dismantle the deterministic positioning that gives participation as guaranteed only by accessing to media. Based on data from various empirical studies, it reveals that the media practices of children and young people are guided more by consumption than by production and that the paths to participation do not always follow principles of expression and citizenship, concluding that a rich and diverse media environment and demanding, critical and participatory publics poses media literacy as a fundamental 21st century competence and a right for all children and young people.
