Supporting new principals as leaders of learning through mentoring
This paper by Tiernan O’Donnell of the Maynooth University is a qualitative study to explore the experiences and perceptions of newly appointed principals in relation to the effectiveness of a formal mentoring programme. The main question addressed is how mentoring can be used for this target group to become good leaders. It is a comprehensive study that analyses the situation in detail and can be transferred to many other mentoring approaches. It discusses methodological aspects to take into account as well as topics such as supportive relationships, sharing learning experiences, emotional awareness and mentee motivation.
